In January 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations have the same rights as individuals to participate in elections as campaign contributors.
At Murray Hill Inc. we asked our- selves, “Why stop there? Why shouldn’t corporations be able to run for office?” To answer this question, Murray Hill Inc. becomes the first corporation to run for Congress.
MURRAY HILL INC. FOR CONGRESS
Soon, Murray Hill Inc. for Congress had more than 10,000 fans on Facebook, with nearly a quarter of a million people watching Murray Hill’s campaign video on YouTube. With coverage from MSNBC, CBS’ “Face the Nation,” NPR’s All Things Considered, The Washington Post, and scores of interviews on radio programs across the country, Murray Hill’s campaign quickly started a national discussion about the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United and its effect.
WAS IT REAL? OR WAS IT SATIRE?
Not everyone was sure. One thing was sure, though: with no contributions, corporate or otherwise, we took Murray Hill’s message to millions of Americans — and got them asking the right questions about Citizens United.
